Energy and carbon footprint

One of our main priorities at Palmstead is energy efficiency and sustainability.

At the very core of our commitment to enhancing energy efficiency, we exclusively partner with electricity providers that supply 100% green and sustainable energy. This fundamental step ensures that all our power needs are met in an environmentally responsible manner, aligning with our broader sustainability goals.

Power optimisation and cost reduction
To further reduce our energy consumption, we have installed a ‘Power Perfector’ voltage power optimiser. This innovative device lowers energy usage, cuts costs, and significantly reduces carbon emissions. Additionally, it protects our electrical equipment from the damaging effects of excessive voltage, thereby extending the lifespan of our devices and systems.

Investment in solar energy
Our commitment to renewable energy is also demonstrated by the investment in and installation of a large solar array on the roof of our dispatch shed and office building. The solar installation plays a crucial role in reducing our reliance on the grid during daylight hours, powering everything from our offices, kitchens, and welfare facilities to essential operational systems like water pumps, the potting machine, and the electric/hybrid car charging points in our staff and visitor car park.

Did you know...

Our dispatch shed and office building was originally a B&Q Warehouse in Hampshire which we have re-purposed to suit our logistical and office requirements.

Energy-efficient lighting

The majority of the lights across the nursery have been upgraded to low-energy LEDs.

Most of these are fitted with timers and motion sensors to prevent unnecessary energy use, ensuring lights are only on when needed.

How we are committed to sustainability

Water harvesting

Sustainable water management is a priority for Palmstead. With water harvesting networks covering more than 70% of the nursery area of the site, we can store up to 75 million litres of rainwater to support our highly efficient irrigation systems.

Recycling plastics

As well as pots made from recycled plastics, at Palmstead we also collect our waste pots and compress them in a plastic compactor along with trays and packaging. They are processed by our recycling partners, segregated and repurposed.

Our composting process

Our clippings, recycled plants and compost sweepings go into our composting process. Our heaps are regularly turned and eventually ploughed in where our thousands of field grown trees are produced.
