Mahonia japonica (Japanese mahonia) is a member of the Berberidaceae family. This evergreen shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – cold winter (-15 to -10ºc) and is hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open or exposed sites or central / northerly locations. For optimal growth, it prefers north–facing or west–facing or east–facing or south–facing aspect and sheltered positions. It thrives best in chalk or clay or loam or sand soil types and should be placed in full shade or partial shade or full sun.
