Melianthus major is a member of the Francoaceae family. This perennial exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterised by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of half-hardy (unheated glasshouse/mild winter [-5 to 1ºc]) and is hardy in coastal/mild areas except in hard winters, though it is at risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good microclimate and can survive with artificial winter protection.
When fully mature, Melianthus major can reach an ultimate height of 1.5–2.5 m and a spread of 1.5–2.5 m. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun.
