Halesia carolina (Carolina silverbell) is a member of the Styracaceae family. This tree exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – cold winter (-15 to -10ºc) and is hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open or exposed sites or central / northerly locations. Many evergreens suffer foliage damage and plants in pots will be at increased risk.
When fully mature, Halesia carolina can reach an ultimate height of 4–8 metres and a spread of wider than 8 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, west–facing, east–facing, or north–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
