Sorbus torminalis (wild service tree) is a member of the Rosaceae family. This tree exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) – hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.

When fully mature, Sorbus torminalis can reach an ultimate height of Over 12 metres and a spread of Wider than 8 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers east–facing, south–facing, north–facing, west–facing aspect and exposed, sheltered exposure. It thrives best in chalk, loam, sand soil types and should be placed in a full sun, partial shade position.
