Athyrium filix-femina (lady fern) is a member of the Woodsiaceae family. This fern exhibits a clump forming growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Athyrium filix-femina can reach an ultimate height of 0.5–1 metres and a spread of 0.5–1 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a north–facing or east–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full shade or partial shade.
