Osmunda regalis (royal fern) is a member of the Osmundaceae family. This fern exhibits a clump forming growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Osmunda regalis can reach an ultimate height of 1.5–2.5 metres and a spread of 0.5–1 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, west–facing, north–facing, or east–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, clay, or loam soil types and should be placed in full shade, full sun, or partial shade.
