Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' (western red cedar 'Atrovirens') is a member of the Cupressaceae family. This conifer exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) – hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' can reach an ultimate height of Over 12 metres and a spread of Wider than 8 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers west–facing, south–facing, north–facing, east–facing aspect and exposed, sheltered exposure. It thrives best in chalk, clay, loam, sand soil types and should be placed in a full sun position.
