SOFT LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP

25.09.13

Ashford International Hotel
(09.00 - 16.00 approx)

Native or Non-native,
which one's best?.....

The drive from planners, ecologists and developers seeking to get top marks in the BREEAM league table has resulted in greater specification of native plants.  However, there are ample examples where native plants have been used without any justification or fitness for purpose, while non-native plants are subject to a more rigorous interrogation and justification process as they don’t fit the black or white policy.  There is concern that this native only policy is detrimental to good planting design as native plants don’t have to perform to “right plant right place” or form and function, they can even be unsuitable and raise no query.  These factors can have a negative effect on the aesthetics and function of good planting design.  By selecting this topic for this year’s workshop we hope that the discussions from both sides of the argument will equip professional planting designers with greater understanding and the tools to negotiate with.

That in mind we are putting together speakers who can explain the principles of Biodiversity and sustainability and generate good discussion.

Speakers for the 2013 event include:

Tony Kirkham from RBG Kew, who was unable to attend last year, will share his favourite recommendations for planting trees with climate change in mind and how to plant a tree properly. He will discuss the issues resulting from the European trade in plants and the disease risks which are here or on their way. He will also help to define "Origin and Provenance" and guide delegates when best to use these in plant selection.

Professor Chris Baines, a long term proponent for encouraging wildlife into planted landscapes and a much sought after Government advisor, will add to this debate.

Professor Nigel Dunnett, Sheffield University, one of the designers of the hugely successful Olympic Park landscape which was founded on the principles of the Biodiversity Action Plan.  His other field of expertise is roof gardens which also hit the BREEAM native only policy with significant impact on biodiversity.  Nigel is keen to assist with the discussion of this topic.

Other speakers from the BRE and Ecologists are being sought and will be added once confirmed.

Booking is via the on-line form below and there is a charge of £22.50 including VAT.  If you wish to register but pay by official order on account please email your booking to workshop@palmstead.co.uk.  Further information on the workshop, interviews with the speakers and final joining details will be issued to delegates a couple of weeks before the day.
