Viburnum opulus (guelder rose) is a member of the Viburnaceae family. This deciduous shrub exhibits a columnar upright growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of Hardy – Very cold winter (-20 to -15ºC) Hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection. .
When fully mature, Viburnum opulus can reach an ultimate height of 4–8 metres and a spread of 2.5–4 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers north–facing, west–facing, south–facing, east–facing aspect and exposed, sheltered exposure. It thrives best in chalk, clay, loam, sand soil types and should be placed in a full shade, full sun, partial shade position.
