Osmanthus aquifolium (thorny holly olive) is a member of the Oleaceae family. This evergreen shrub exhibits a spreading branched growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – cold winter (-15 to -10ºc) and is hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open or exposed sites or central / northerly locations. Many evergreens suffer foliage damage and plants in pots will be at increased risk. It features a flower fragrance.
When fully mature, Osmanthus aquifolium can reach an ultimate height of 4–8 metres and a spread of 1.5–2.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers south–facing or west–facing aspect and sheltered positions. It thrives best in chalk or clay or loam or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun.
