Origanum majorana (sweet marjoram) is a member of the Lamiaceae family. This culinary herb exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its semi evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of tender – cool or frost-free glasshouse (1 to 5ºc) and is tolerant of low temperatures but will not survive being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions in winter, but can be grown outdoors once risk of frost is over It features a foliage fragrance.
When fully mature, Origanum majorana can reach an ultimate height of 0.5–1 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers south–facing aspect and exposed or sheltered positions. It thrives best in chalk or loam soil types and should be placed in full sun.
