Euonymus alatus (winged spindle) is a member of the Celastraceae family. This deciduous shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) – hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.

When fully mature, Euonymus alatus can reach an ultimate height of 1.5–2.5 metres and a spread of 1.5–2.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers south–facing or north–facing or west–facing or east–facing aspect and exposed or sheltered exposure. It thrives best in chalk or clay or loam or sand soil types and should be placed in a full sun or partial shade position.
