Asarum europaeum (asarabacca) is a member of the Aristolochiaceae family. This perennial exhibits a matforming growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Asarum europaeum can reach an ultimate height of 0.0–0.1 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers north–facing or west–facing or east–facing aspect and sheltered positions. It thrives best in clay or loam or sand soil types and should be placed in full shade or partial shade.
