This conifer exhibits a columnar upright growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, x Cuprocyparis leylandii 'Castlewellan' can reach an ultimate height of higher than 12 metres and a spread of 2.5–4 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, north–facing, west–facing, or east–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
