Fagus sylvatica (common beech) is a member of the Fagaceae family. This tree is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Fagus sylvatica can reach an ultimate height of over 12 metres and a spread of wider than 8 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, west–facing, north–facing, or east–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
