Washingtonia robusta (southern washingtonia) is a member of the Arecaceae family. This evergreen shrub exhibits a columnar upright growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of heated glasshouse – warm temperate (5 to 10ºc) and is can be grown outdoors in summer throughout most of the UK while daytime temperatures are high enough to promote growth.

When fully mature, Washingtonia robusta can reach an ultimate height of higher than 12 metres and a spread of 2.5–4 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a west–facing or south–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in loam soil and should be placed in full sun.
