Nerine bowdenii (Bowden lily) is a member of the Amaryllidaceae family. This perennial exhibits a tufted growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – cold winter (-15 to -10ºc) and is hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open or exposed sites or central / northerly locations. Many evergreens suffer foliage damage and plants in pots will be at increased risk.
When fully mature, Nerine bowdenii can reach an ultimate height of 0.1–0.5 metres and a spread of 0–0.1 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers west–facing or east–facing or south–facing aspect and sheltered positions. It thrives best in chalk or clay or loam or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun.
