Aralia elata (angelica tree) is a member of the Araliaceae family. This deciduous shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – cold winter (-15 to -10ºc) and is hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open or exposed sites or central / northerly locations. Many evergreens suffer foliage damage and plants in pots will be at increased risk.
When fully mature, Aralia elata can reach an ultimate height of 8–12 metres and a spread of wider than 8 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a west–facing or east–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in loam or sand soil types and should be placed in partial shade.
